St Peter's Well, West Mersea, after earthquake on 14 April 1884. The crack caused by the earthquake can be seen in the path behind the men. A report says that by this time the crack had virtually closed up again.
Another report says "On the morning of the occurrence the water turned white, as if mixed with lime, and was quite warm, but the day after had resumed its pellucid qualities. These facts were gathered from one of the oldest residents on the island."
