RAF Rescue Helicopter on the School Field, West Mersea. It was being used to supply the laid-up ships in the River Blackwater during the cold winter of 1962-63. See School Log book WMS_LOG5_P167 for more details.

Alan Smith adds:
Bert Carter had the contract to supply the caretakers on the ships in the Blackwater. He could not do it because the sea froze so he arranged for the RAF to take supplies out to the men. Later he had to organise the RAF to lift the men off the ships when it became too dangerous to leave them there. When they had finished, Bert arranged a cup of tea for the RAF helicopter crew. When he got the bill, he worked out that it had cost him £80 to give them the tea! Not much now but a lot in 1963!
