Title | The Nothe and views of West Mersea 1945-1954 |
Abstract | Susan Luckham photograph album.
1930-1945 the Nothe belonged to Susan's grandparents W. Trego Webb and Isabel Webb. They had all of the cottage except the very southern end.
The family suffered in the big flood of 1953 and then moved from the Nothe to Hillworth in Mersea Avenue - a few photographs of Hillworth are included at the end of the album. |

When the family moved from the Nothe in 1954, the figures were given to West Mersea Parish Church. Susan Luckham wrote the following for the Church Magazine in 2005.
'The Annunciation' on the South Wall
by Susan Luckham
The Annunciation on the South wall of the Parish Church had belonged to my Father, Dr. C. Willett Cunnington (probably inherited from his Mother) I remember it well from my childhood when we lived in Church End, Finchley, and it adorned the wall above the brick built fireplace in the drawing room. My parents retired from general practice at the end of the war (1945) and came to live in The Nothe at the end of Coast Road, (then one dwelling plus one separate cottage, let-off). In the entrance hall at that time was a brick fireplace, and the Annunciation had a ready made home.
However, 1953 saw the East Coast floods when the high tide came into The Nothe and my parents subsequently moved to higher and smaller accommodation on the Island, and my Father felt 'The Annunciation' should have a permanent home in the Church. This must have been in 1954. | Date: | Before 1953 | Source: | Mersea Museum / Susan Luckham Collection |
