Mrs. Vanderbilt in the cockpit of VIM as the 12 metre prepares to race at Harwich, Monday, June 12th 1939. A reef has been taken in the mainsail with a lacing line, in anticipation of the freshening wind. The spruce boom rests in the crutch and the fine Egyptian cotton mainsail is bellying away to leeward before being hoisted. The mainsheet arrangement differed from those in contemporary British 12 metres, leading forward along the boom, then down to deck sheaves forward of the cockpit, with the tail taken to a winch. The lightweight design of the running backstay lead sheaves is typical of the thought put into the design of the VIM but the compass binnacle is of traditinal pattern. [JL]
