Back Row 2nd from the right; this is my Grandmother Elizabeth May Russell Born on Mersea island in 1898. Later she married Robert Atkins from London who came over to the island as a serving soldier. They had nine children Doris, Percy, Ted, Vera, Joyce, Phyl, Pam, May and Geoff. Most of them stayed on the island apart from two. My mother was Vera Atkins who moved to Scotland after marrying my father Robert Sutherland who was stationed on this island with the Royal Artillery and her brother Percy who moved to the Isle of Wight. My grandmother had three brothers, George, Sydney and Alfred all born and brought up here and later buried here on the island. Alfred is buried in the Graveyard at East Mersea Church with his brother Sydney Wife Kate and daughter Margaret. There is a comemerative plaque inside the church for Alfred as he received the Victoria medal for his services during WW1. My great grandmother and great grandfather are buried in an unmarked grave in Barfield Road cemetary. My grandmother Elizabeth's and grandfather Robert's ashes are also buried beside the unmarked grave along with their infant daughter May? who died young. The family have put two commerative benches in this graveyard for my grandmother and grandfather and their daughter Joyce an
