The picture is of a ladies football team from when she was working in a factory in the village making wire ropes. Mary was also in the Womens Land Army.

Her father was Will Gutteridge, a long term soldier from the Great War, but then working at Wilkins and her mother was Mabel Gutteridge, née Cason.

I was born in Tollesbury in 1946 but Mary and our family moved to the Isle of Man in 1950 and stayed there and there is now a sizeable family of Butt and Gutteridge descendants here, with cousins still in Tollesbury, including the Butt families at Bohuns Hall Farm.

The wire rope factory was operating during the war. My mother thought they were making ropes for gliders. My mother was in the Land Army as well - she worked with her distant uncle Sid Whipp, not sure where he farmed but he was from the Darcy area.

He had a threshing machine which did the rounds of farms and during that she met my father, whose family farmed at Barn Hall, near Salcot / Tolleshunt Knights.

Dec 2017, Anne and Roland Willsmore have done some more research on the photograph and given us the rest of the names.
