Biography of James 'Jim' Mussett, born 1905, the son of Clark Mussett.

James 'Jim' Mussett born 1905, the son of Clark Mussett. Jim started fishing in his father's cutter EDITH. In 1926 he joined the schooner HALCYON. During the winter months Jim did oyster dredging and winkling. In 1927 he joined the LULWORTH. On the LULWORTH were Leslie 'Hutch' Mussett, Peter Owen, Harry Milgate, Tom Cudmore and Alf Farrar, all from Mersea. After the LULWORTH, Jim joined the SUS, a 65ft schooner. After a short peiod of time Jim joined the GLADORIS, a 70ft Bermudian yawl. After a long season, Jim joined the 75ft yawl PALMOSA. He stayed with her for four seasons. Jim then joined the ASTRA in Spring 1933. At that time his wage was £2.14.0 a week. His employment was generally as a deck hand. In 1937 he joined ENDEAVOUR at £3.4.0 a week. Jim also crewed in the 178ft motor yacht VIVA II.

In 1935 Jim bought the JACK in which he did dredging and winkling in the winter months. He joined the ASTRA, he then joined the DIADEM as Mate for a wage of £3.5.0. The DIADEM became a houseboat at Mersea in 1947.
During the war because of illness Jim joined Gowens the sailmakers. After the War Jim stayed with Gowens for some time, but yearned for the outdoor life and returned to Ebbing, picking up year old oysters for sale to the merchants for relaying on the oyster beds. Jim also collected shram from the Naas for Councillor Prigg's chicken grit business.
