City Hall, The Lane, on the left. The pile of rubble on the right is all that remains of a cottage or cottages, former home of a Mussett family. i.e. Ernie, Iris, Harry and Sidney. The white cottage in the background occupied at this time by Peter Smith, the Essex cricketer. Joe and Blanche Hewes originally lived in the Pink Cottages. Cottages demolished at one time were used by the local carrier Cudmore, also occupied by the grandmother of Ruth Carpenter (Woodley).
The 'Kete' is behind the pink cottage - home to the Davies family.
