Blockhouse Fort, East Mersea. An aerial view from a kite, looking north. The fort had earth walls and was triangular. The remains are in the lower half of the picture, with two walls pointing to the south. The point is now covered by the beach. The third wall, which would have been across the centre of the picture, is thought to have been destroyed when the sea wall was built.
The fort was built around 1547 and not used after 1667.
This is the eastern end of Mersea Island - Pyefleet Channel curves round across the top and on the right, the River Colne heads up to Colchester.
