Coast Road and the corner of Victory Road. The first house on the right is Cathay. Boomie barge BRITANNIC and Hempstead's shed in the distance. Postcard West Mersea No.21.

Arthur Romney Green lived in Cathay in the latter years of WW1. He was a furniture designer in the Arts and Crafts trandition and the subject of an article by Neil Hyman in the Decorative Arts Society Journal No. 41 in 2017. While in the house, he and his companion Bertha were host to D.H. Lawrence. Arthur installed woodworking benches and brought over a man from London, Harrison, to make some furniture. He and Bertha left around August 1919.

Neil Hyman has kindly sent Mersea Museum a copy of his article.
