A ghost of a church. Daily Mail article on Langenhoe church, speculating that it was demolished because of alleged paranormal happenings in the 1940.
[The church was badly damaged in the 1884 earthquake. It was then substantially rebuilt. By the 1950s it was in a poor structural state and after much discussion, it was demolished in 1963.]
The Daily Mail article is by Roger Lord of Aylesbury, Bucks. He talks about sitting outside the church as a boy in the 1950s working on his father's milk round. The suggestion that the church was haunted came from Rev. Ernest Merryweather who was appointed to Langenhoe in 1937. He reported a lot of psychic disturbance in the church. In nearby Langenhoe manor house, he claims to have witnessed a fantastic apparition. While admiring the view from the window, the turned round and walked into a fleeting embrance with a naked young woman. The girl is said to be Arabella Waldergrave [sic - Waldegrave ?], sweetheart of an earlier vicar, who was murdered by him on the discovery that she was pregnant.
