Ron Green says about Herbert:
My uncle Herbert Green spent a lifetime on the buses but, apart from the Primrose, not in Mersea. The West Mersea school book shows him leaving to start a bricklaying apprenticeship but it was not known if he ever did. We do know that he joined the army when under age. He always claimed to have been driving lorries in France when under age. He also claimed to have collected a new army lorry from the Daimler works somewhere West Of London. He and a colleague collected a couple of ex. army lorry chassis from Austin's yard in the London docks after the war and drove them back to Mersea in the freezing cold. It took them ages to get up the hill in Brentwood which was a sheet of ice. He married Jessie Pullen of Blue Row and it seems they went to live in Romford where he worked for a coach company running out to Great Yarmouth etc. But for most of his working life he was with the Eastern National at the Chelmsford depot and lived in Chelmsford. In the last few years he was an inspector and it's interesting that on my postcard of barges being unloaded on the hard, he and my uncle Rupert Green are in the Primrose lorry. Both became Inspectors, Rupert in the Essex Police stationed at Ongar and they often met up for a yarn. Herbert and Jessie often drove over to Mersea at the week end and uncle would give me a sixpence. Other uncles would give me a penny.
