June 2014 Ron Green wrote the following for Maldon and Heybridge Life:
OLD DAYS AT HEYBRIDGE BASIN
The postcard I have chosen this month was published by J Reynolds, High Street, Maldon and shows a very busy scene taken on 7th September 1911 with the Danish barquentine HEKLA in the basin loaded with 220 tons of deals (Softwood) consigned to Browns of Chelmsford. This will be offloaded into small lighters as seen in the foreground and drawn by horse along the canal all the way to Browns yard at Chelmsford. Coming in through the lock is another Danish square rigged vessel NATHALIA with a slightly larger freight of 229 tons of deals also for Browns. Her squaresails can be seen behind the haybarge. A group of people have lines attached to the ship and are helping her through. I understand it was a tradition for all available men, women and children to join in.

The haybarge (Stackie) is the WILLIAM & ARTHUR. She was owned by James Keeble of Maldon and is waiting to lock out and be on her way to deliver her stack in London as feed for the many horses working there at that time.

Card published by F.J. Reynolds, High Street, Maldon. Posted from Heybridge 31 October 1913.
