Swedish four-masted barque ABRAHAM RYDBERG preparing to leave Ipswich. Tug STRONGHOLD.

Master of STRONGHOLD was Charles West. He was a bargeman and served in the Merchant Navy in the First World War. After the war he worked for Ipswich Dock Commission as Master of Tug 90. This was sold to owners in Southampton in 1933, and he then became master of the tug Stronghold. This was requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport in 1939, and both he and the tug assisted when HMS GIPSY was sunk on 21st November 1939. He was master of STRONGHOLD we believe throughout the war, returning to work for the Dock Commission in 1945. [Graham Daldry - great grandson of Charles West]
