Church and City Notes contd.

Before the business of the latter meeting was commenced, the following resolution was moved from the Chair, and agreed to in solemn silence by all present rising in their places:- "The fishermen of West Mersea, in meeting assembled, express their deep sorrow at the great loss they in common with the whole British Empire have sustained in the death of their beloved Queen, and respectfully assure His Majesty the King of their unswerving loyalty."

The Treat for the children attending the Church Sunday School was held in the Church Hall on Thursday evening, January 17th. Tea was at 6 o'clock, after which a handsome tree, well loaded with presents, was lighted up and its treasures distributed, much to the delight of the juvenile portion of the assembly, who gave startling evidence of their appreciation by an indulgence in the peculiar forms of noise so dear to the heart of youth. Mrs Leith and Miss A. Roberts kindly gave toys for the tree. In all over 200 were present.

The Vicar most cordially recommends the case of Miss Charlotte Cooper, aged 68, who is a candidate at the forthcoming election of the United Kingdom Beneficent Association. He will be glad to receive proxies before March 12th.

During Lent there will be no dances, concerts, or other entertainments in the Church Hall. It is hoped, however, that we may be able to arrange Lantern Lectures weekly, of which due notice will be given. On Ash Wednesday, 20th inst., there will be Holy Communion at 8; Morning Prayer, Litany, and Commination Service at 11; Evening Prayer and Address at 7. Other services during the Holy Season will be Morning Prayer and Litany at 11 on Wednesdays and Fridays, Holy Communion on Thursdays at 8, and Evening Prayer with Address on Fridays at 7. Are we always going to rest content with public worship on Sundays only, and as little of that as is compatible with decency? We trust not.
