The Late Samuel Cant White
By the death of Mr Samuel Cant White, aged 74 years, of Bank House, Captains Road, West Mersea, the parish has lost one of its most noted and respected business men.

He was a man of multifarious activities, and beloved of a wide circle of friends. He and his forebears were associated from its inception with the Congregational Baptist Church where he served in many capacities, and was treasurer and life deacon up to the time of his demise. In business he was a pioneer of local trading setting up a variety of concerns which provided general and household requirements, and the business house of White in consequence became known on the island as 'Whiteleys'. He was local agent of Barclays Bank for many years, an ex-Parish Councillor, a pillar of the old British School - the site of which he gave - a trustee of Court 'Sailors Home AOF', a School Manager and a man whose advice was much sought in matters concerning the welfare of the parish. It was at his instigation that the postal telegraph was extended to Mersea, and he became one of the guarantors. His retirement about ten years ago led to the disposal of his business houses, which are now run as separate concerns by traders.
