"I was pleased to receive an invitation from David Patient to attend the launch of the smack Varuna CK 442 which David's Fullbridge yard has rebuilt. The occasion was also David's retirement party. My friend David Green had also been invited so we went along together picking up another friend Don Wright at Saltcotte on the way. The party was very well attended with naturally a good number of smack and barge enthusiasts amoungst the gathering. David Green took a number of photos one of which is shown here. The other photo comes from an old postcard in Brian Jay's collection and shows Varuna at work. She is moored off the Clacton seafront and the crew are sorting their catch of shrimps ready to take ashore for sale. The date is probably in the 1930s when she has a motor installed. The sailing gear has been reduced, the topmast has been put ashore and she appears to have a bermudan mainsail. It was very pleasing to see another old Essex smack go back into the water."
