Barges in the Colne: this photograph has all the qualities of a painting. Douglas Went captured the effect of liquid light on a high water stirred by the south-west breeze, bring wavelets slopping into the foreground.
Two bowsprit bages lie anchored off Bateman's Tower, Brightlingsea, one a mule which appears to have trouble with her mizzen gaff, which is stowed in the shrouds. Two others are fetching into the Colne anchorage, bound upriver. [JL]
