Peter Moss Mussett, born on 6 December 1878 at West Mersea, his mother was Caroline Mussett (born 1856 - died 1937) no father's name for Peter's birth certificate maybe the Moss is a clue?.
Caroline was the daughter of William Mussett 1832 - 1888 & wife Rebecca née Trayler 1835-1920, William owned smack IDA CK64 named after a favourite daughter, Peter also named my grandmother Ida.
William & Rebecca lived in Myrtle Villas, High Street passing Peter off as their own son, not Caroline's. Even Peter's daughter Ida didn't know and just knew Caroline as an Aunt.
Caroline and sister Ida are buried together at Barfield Road Cemetery. I have been unable to find the burial place of William & Rebecca but I am lead to believe they stay on Mersea.
In 1998 myself and my brother visited Doris Barrell (father William Mussett) who was also a granddaughter of William & Rebecca who gave me a copy of the Mussett's on Mersea family tree, made using the Bapts of St Peter & St Pauls' but this missed out anyone not christened.
The photo of Peter Moss Mussett taken in 1901 in China. Peter had joined the Royal Navy in 1897 at Chatham and served on board minelayers in China's Boxer Revolution in 1901, Archangel Russia in WW1 supplying the White Army having got iced in and on the HMS IPHIGENIA at the Zeebrugge Raids on St George's Day 1918. She was one of the blockade ships on the Mole to stop the submarines leaving port and sinking our supply ships as we were very short on food. Peter retired from the ships in 1920 and died in 1959 at Gillingham Kent. [Angela Coles] ANC_001
