Title | Appleton family of Tollesbury |
Abstract | A collection of photographs and documents, mostly loaned by Jenny Bibby née Scott of Tollesbury.
Her Great Grandfather was Stephen Appleton, born c1852 and lost overboard from his smack EMILY 18 December 1913. He was one of those charged with piracy in the 1894 Culch War.
Ernest Stephen Appleton was the son of Stephen Appleton, born c1876. At the age of 13 in 1889, he was apprenticed to his father for 4 years.
Photographs show Ernest in the crew of the steam yacht ROMOLA, the gaff cutter WEST WIND, and in 1910 as Mate of the yacht SUNSHINE.
Ernest Appleton was booked on TITANIC to join a yacht in the States but there was a delay and he was rebooked on the OLYMPIC. He was also knocked overboard from a yacht in the Atlantic and was in the water a considerable time before being picked up.
For many years, Ernest was paid hand on the yawl SAUNTERER owned by Thomas Belt and based at Blyth in Northumberland.
James Robert Appleton was twin brother of Ernest and he also crewed on the yachts. A photograph shows him on the steam yacht MENA.
Atlantic Crossings on passenger ships
A further series of images from Jenny Bibby's collection covers a number of Atlantic crossings by Ernest Appleton and other Tollesbury men, as passengers going to America to crew yachts. Ships included are OCEANIC, PHILADELPHIA and ST. PAUL.
From Peter Bibby:
I found the 1912 passenger lists for the OLYMPIC online and the April 3rd sailing (7 days before TITANIC sailed) 1912 from Southampton had the following Tollesbury men listed:
Henry Pettican age 42 second class to New York
Ernest Appleton age 35 third class to Hartford Connecticut
Clifford Rice age 23 third class to Hartford Connecticut
Albert Riley age 28 third class
Charles Smith age 18 third class
Walter Howe age 25 third class
There are also papers relating to the Aberdeen Line DEMOSTHENES 1914/1915. Thomas Henry Bossence Batten sailed on her as a Baker, before joining the Australian Army and eventually getting killed in action in France. See IYS_050 Jenny Bibby's grandmother Emily was a Batten.
