TitleA history of the land at 69 High Street West Mersea
AbstractA set of notes looking at the history of a plot of land that stretches from High Street West Mersea, near the junction with Barfield Road, to Captains Road.

1. 1817 The field is shown as owned by Thomas May on his 1817 map, named Church & Walnut Tree Field. MMC_P1077A_887
2. 1838 Tithe Map it is field 301, named Church Field, owner Thomas May, occupier Thomas May Junior.
3. 1881 OS map (surveyed 1874) shows this as part of the field and shows no buildings. OS1881_XLVI_001
4. 1880-1890 house was erected on this site, thought to have been moved from the Hard, near present day location of Gowens [ Details via Peter Rudlin. ]
5. 14 September 1891 from Henry John May to C.M. White by Deed of Gift RUD_DDS_101_002 [This is the date of Henry John May's will, but the property is not individually mentioned in it - WIL_HJM ]
6. 1898 OS map shows one house on the plot, which stretches back to Captains Road.
7. 25 June 1914 Sale (W.J. Bean bankruptcy) Lot 9 detached cottage with frontage to High Street and back frontage to Captains' Road, let to Mr Roger Mole. To C. White £125. EST_ORL_006
8. 31 August 1914 Conveyance Mary Amelia Josselyn to Clifford Manning White - plot is currently in occupation of Roger Mole. RUD_DDS_101_002
[ Roger Herbert Mole born 1871 married 24 Oct 1896 at WM Parish Church Annie Harding born 1869. Originally a dredgerman, in the 1911 Census he is in High Street and is a Seed Grower.]

9. 21 Oct 1922 Conveyance C.M. White to Mrs M.G. Tracy [sic]. RUD_DDS_102_002   RUD_DDS_102_003   RUD_DDS_102_004 .
Schedule and map refer to the conveyance of northern part of the plot 31 Aug 1914 and southern part of the plot 28 Sept 1918.
10. 1921 Register of Electors Mary Gertrude Tracy registered in High Street, abode 18 Trinity Street Colchester
11. 1931, 1936, 1939 Registers of Electors, Joseph Perkins Tracey [sic] and Mary Gertrude Tracey at "Little Grey House"
12. 1945 Register of Electors Joseph Perkins Tracey and Mary Gertrude Tracey at "Little Grey Home"
13. 5 Jun 1948 Conveyance between George Crowe Ward and Cyril Ottewell Belcham, and R.E. Ingram of property (or part of it).
14. 5 Oct 1949 Conveyance R.E. Ingram Esq. to Mrs R.A. Hunt. To be known as Hatchetts, previously known as "Little Grey Home". RUD_DDS_103_001
15. 1951 & 1955 Register of Electors Frederick N. Hunt and Rosemary A. Hunt at Hatchetts, High Street
16. 22 June 1955 the strip of land coloured green on the plan was conveyed to Maud Elizabeth Wells RUD_DDS_103_001
17. 7 April 1956 Captains Road end of the plot conveyed to Maud Elizabeth Wells.
17. 1 Jan 1968 Hatchetts is now 69 High Street
18. 9 April 1968 Conveyance between Rose Alma Hunt of the one part and James McNaughton and June Mary McNaughton of part of the property having a frontage to the High Street there of 108 feet and forming part of the southern most portion of the property. RUD_DDS_103_001
[This was on the death of her husband. Rose split remaining plot into two, built Close Cottage on the western end of the plot and moved there.

On the 7th day of April 1956 the plot coloured brown on the adjacent plan (which included the within-mentioned interest in respect of the hedge and ditch abutting) was conveyed to Maud Elizabeth Wells in fee simple.

By a conveyance dated the 9 April 1968 made between the within named Rose Alma Hunt of the one part and James McNaughton and June Mary McNaughton of Stone Cottage Fyfield Essex of the other part of the property conveyed by the within written deed and having a frontage to the High Street there of 108 feet and forming part of the southern most portion of the property conveyed by the within written deed was conveyed to the said James McNaughton and June Mary McNaugton in fee simple and their right to production of the within written deed was thereby acknowledged. On 22 June 1955 the strip of land coloured green on the plan was conveyed to Maud Elizabeth Wells in fee simple and her right to production of this deed acknowledged.

On the 7th day of April 1956 the plot coloured brown on the adjacent plan (which included the within-mentioned interest in respect of the hedge and ditch abutting) was conveyed to Maud Elizabeth Wells in fee simple.
