The unit was formed in late 1949/50, having the use of the H.O.R.S.A. buildings at the school in Barfield Road as headquarters on two evenings per week.
Classrooms were used for seamanship and ropework training on Tuesdays whilst the ship's company attended parade in uniform on Fridays, in the canteen, for colours and sunset.
The band was formed with instruments donated by the local British Legion. Herbert Burgess taught the bugle and Bob Bisco the drums. They quickly gained a reputation as a very good marching band, taking part in carnivals, village fetes and various displays in the local area.
Cadets were able to attend courses on R.N. ships and shore stations where they gained knowledge and skills while having a good time for very little cost.
After the death of Albert Stacey (the last commanding officer) in 1965, the unit was unable to continue and finally disbanded in 1968. |
