Owen Kitchener Hewes was the youngest son of Henry (Harry) and Sarah Hewes née Rudlin. He had 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Owen's father died in 1919 and his mother in 1922, leaving him an orphan - he lived with his brother Hector until he left school and then he went to live in Chichester with his married sister Louisa (Mrs Gant). He was with her until he joined the Army.
His eldest sister Kate (Mrs Young) was killed earlier in 1941 in a London Air Raid.

It is with regret we record the death of Sapper Owen Kitchener Hewes, of the Royal Engineers. "Tich" as he was affectionately called by all who knew him, was a Mersea lad of 26 years of age and his death was the result of an accident. The news came as a greater shock to his brothers and sisters because his eldest sister Kate (Mrs Young) was killed in a "blitz" on London a few weeks ago. She was buried in the ruins of a house which caught fire, and she was burned to death.
The family have suffered many vicissitudes. Ten children were left orphans. The father, Mr Harry Hewes, died when they were quite young. When deceased, the youngest of them was only six years of age the mother dropped down dead. "Tich" lived with his elder brother, Hector, for a few years, until he was 14, and then he went to live with a married sister, Louisa (Mrs Gant), and was there with her at Chichester until he joined the Army. There are two other brothers in the forces, one in the Essex Regiment and the other in the Air Force, to which the elder brother, who is registered, expects a call at any time.
Another sister, Violet, has been bombed out of her home and is staying with her sister, Mrs R. Cutts, here at West Mersea.
The funeral took place at West Mersea Cemetery on Tuesday amid tokens of deep respect. The chief mourners were brothers Hector, Norman, Lewis and Leonard, and sisters Louisa, Violet and Hilda ...

The funeral took place on Tuesday of Sapper Owen Kitchener Hewes, aged 26, who met with a tragic accident the previous Wednesday when engaged in military duties. Hewes, who comes of a well-known Mersea family, was one of a family of ten, his mother dying when he was six years of age, his father having died previously. He made his home with an elder brother until he left school, when he went to live with a married sister at Chichester, from where he joined the Army. His tragic death has been a great shock to his brothers and sisters who have only recently suffered another bereavement through enemy action. The funeral on Tuesday was escorted by an officer and men of the Royal Engineers ...
