Edith Smith Diary

A diary written by Edith Smith.
Notes on Edith Smith
She was born in 1858 in Peldon and was there in 1861.
By 1871 the family were at the Fountain with Dad shown as a Labourer Thatcher and Mum as a shop keeper.
Still there in 1881 with Dad 'Beerhouse keeper and seed grower'.
1891 Farmer and beerhouse keeper.
By 1901 James (Dad) has died and Mary Ann is the beerhouse keeper, still at the Fountain.
By 1911 Edith and Mum are at The Maples, West Mersea which Ron tells us was further along East Road near Cross Lane (see MMC_P756_H ) and Charles Boggis has the Fountain. However, in Edith's diary she notes Oct 16th 1911 Alfred Martin went to Fountain. It seems therefore that Charles Boggis was not there very long. Postcard RG11_325 shows the old Fountain when Charles Boggis was there.
By 1914 Mary Ann is once again land lady at the Fountain, also in 1922.
By 1925 they are living in Upland House. I think Mary Ann died in 1916 or 1934 and Edith in 1935 but would need to check these dates. Kelly's directory shows Edith at Upland House in 1937 but the data for these directories was gathered quite a bit before they were published so it's possible. [Chris Kirkman]
