 Death of Lt. Col. Buckle, Galiots, Coast Road.
 One of west Mersea's oldest and most respected citizens, Lt-Col Cuthbert Buckle, 86, died at his home, Galiots, Coast Road, on Thurday.
</p><p>A keen yachtsman, Colonel Buckle came to Mersea Island from Fambridge in the early 1920's, living at East Mersea Hall. When the last world war broke out. he found it difficult to get to London - he was connected with insurance in the City - and moved to West Mersea. He spent a lot of time in during the war in the newly formed River Emergency Service on the Thames and at London Docks.
</p><p>A member of West Mersea Yacht Club, the colonel was the owner of many large yachts during his lifetime.
</p><p>After the 1914 war, Col. Buckle raised and commanded the 33rd City of London Anti-Aircraft Regiment at Lylton Grove Drill Hall, Putney, SW15. He was awarded the CB and the CBE for his work on behalf o the Territorial Army in the City.

Death of Lt. Col. Buckle, Galiots, Coast Road.
One of west Mersea's oldest and most respected citizens, Lt-Col Cuthbert Buckle, 86, died at his home, Galiots, Coast Road, on Thurday.

A keen yachtsman, Colonel Buckle came to Mersea Island from Fambridge in the early 1920's, living at East Mersea Hall. When the last world war broke out. he found it difficult to get to London - he was connected with insurance in the City - and moved to West Mersea. He spent a lot of time in during the war in the newly formed River Emergency Service on the Thames and at London Docks.

A member of West Mersea Yacht Club, the colonel was the owner of many large yachts during his lifetime.

After the 1914 war, Col. Buckle raised and commanded the 33rd City of London Anti-Aircraft Regiment at Lylton Grove Drill Hall, Putney, SW15. He was awarded the CB and the CBE for his work on behalf o the Territorial Army in the City.

 A woman with a host of memories of Mersea and a direct link with the island's famous write Sabine Baring Gould, author of the marshland romance Mehalah died in hospital on Monday.
