The end of a restaurant
Now the Fairhaven Restaurant has really gone. As the auctioneer rapidly took bids for the lots on Thursday and Friday, the restaurant died.

I, for one, felt sad as I thought of the many happy hours I have enjoyed at the numerous functions help there.

The restaurant started life 50 years ago as a long low wooden cafe, which arrived in sections on a lorry from London. The owner, Mr Daly, came with the lorry and arrived at Griffin Garage in search of the plot he had bought without previously viewing it.

At the garage he saw an 11 year old lad and asked him for his assistance. The lad directed the lorry to its destination and earned half-a-crown for himself. The lad grew to be councillor Mr Clem Smith, who was on the council when the plans were passed for the building of the flats to stand on the same site.

In the days when Mr Daly and his partner, Miss Dimmock arrived, Fairhaven Avenue was just a track large enough for a horse and cart, from East road to Osbourne Rd. The lower part of the avenue was a mere footpath between blackberry bushes.

After the cafe had been standing for three years, Mr Daly began to make extensions. Each winter for about 11 years he worked before the extensions were completed.

Eight years ago Mr G. Cock bought the restaurant from Mr Daly and other extensions were carried out. About eighteen months ago Mr Cock sold the business to Mr J. Nicholls.

On Tuesday demolition of the building began. The flats are expected to be completed by September. WMC_SB04_006
