Abstract | Sir Gerald and Lady Upjohn have been members for many years, often come for a quiet meal and sometimes with friends.
Their favourite menu seemed to be Fillet Steak with mushrooms and crip onions followed by [ ? ] omelette.
after dinner very often he asked me to sit at his table and have a chat, I found it very enjoyable, he possessed great
wisdom and it was wonderful to sit and drink at the well of his intelligence. He afterwards became Lord Justice of
Appeal.
Having owned a small poodle, he always made a great fuss of our grey poodle 'Suzy' saying he could understand her as he
talked poodle talk. We also owned a Dalmation who was a great character, his name 'Buttons', he had a habit of eating
water boots if they were left around. On one particular night I summoned up enough courage to ask Lord Upjohn his
opinion on a situation that had arisen that day. A very irate and rude man had rushed into the clubroom without any
explanation in the presence of many members, said he intended to send in a bill for a pair of shoes and waterboots
that Buttons had destroyed. We had already met bills amounting to several pounds over Buttons activities with this
pastime and were getting very fed up with the expense. Lord Upjohn gave me his opinion which was that it was up to
people to protect their own property. Taking his advice, this ended the controversy much to our relieve, and our
thanks to Lord Upjohn for his help.
