| Abstract | Bill was born 1883 and is probably the Island's oldest resident. Bill covers a lot of the island's history. He was present when the wheel tomb / pharos was uncovered in Yorick Road / Beach Road. He says "it is all covered up now".
His memories include the access to the beach dispute between the villagers and Mr Gilbert, owner of Orleans. Revd. Yorick Smythies took Mr Gilbert to court, but lost. However, as a result, Mr Gilbert gave Yorick Road and Beach Road to the people of the island.

John Thorpe was the Headmaster when Bill Clarry was at school, but when Bill was 13, got thrashed out of school along with Ted Martin and Bob Wood.
Bill could recite a poem about John Thorpe:
Johnny Thorpe is a very good man
He tried to teach you all he can
Reading writing arithmetic
But he don't forget to give you the stick.
And when he do he make you dance
out of England and into France
out of France and into Spain
over the hills and back again.
Bill says he was a good school master ...
