Mersea Island Museum - Blackwater Ships

Career:At 13.37 hours on 26 Sep, 1940, the DARCOILA (Master William Anderson), dispersed from convoy OB-217, was torpedoed and sunk by U-32 west of Ireland. The master and 30 crew members were lost.
In Oyster Company ledger.
Essex Record Office document "DF 106/1/10/12 T&MNOFC Record of Ships Moored on Fishery 1930-33" says "Shifted off Fishery 2 March 1932".

Liverpoo Journal of Commerce reports:
5 Feb 1932 sailed Amsterdam for River Blackwater [10 Feb 1932]
5 Dec 1933 sailed River Blackwater for River Tyne.

Betty Hewes (Iain says 'a Mersea girl', 2. Great Aunt Mona - Mona Pickett née Cobley , 3. Aunt Babs - Babs Lindkear-Jensen née Chammon In front with Dog - Edwin Chammon with Prince. Iain says: "My grandfather was master of the SS DARCOILA. He was taken ill whilst on board at Mersea 1932/33 ... Date: cAugust 1932.
