Stuart Henderson joined the CORTONA in the Blackwater:
From my Discharge Book I see we signed on 14 February 1966. If my memory serves me correctly we were signed on by BOT officers
from Tilbury while at anchor in the Blackwater.
The ships crew were recruited from the Shipping Federation (Pool) at the Royal Docks in London and we were bussed to West Mersea. I also recall we were aboard the ship for a few days before we signed on and didn't depart for a week or so later. The trip was to Cape Town for a cargo of fruit. The CORTONA had originally been built as a chilled meat carrier for the South American trade.
CORTONA was renamed KAROS in 1967. She was broken up Kaohsiung July 1980
Voyage Record Cards: CORTONA arrived River Blackwater 15 September 1965 from London. Sailed 19 February 1966 for Cape Town |
