Betty Hewes. Chum Hewes [Betty's father] made quite a good living in the depression, running the Deerhound and an ex-ships lifeboat as a supply and personnel ferry to the laid up ships. Betty used to operate the boats on occasion, and although she was only about 5ft2in, and 15-16 years old, could handle a boatfull of drunks on the way from the Victory to their ship. [Bob Pullen]
