373 Coast Battery R.A. West Mersea. Map is of a portion of Victoria Esplanade with Willoughby Avenue going north left of centre of map. Kialami in upper centre of map [now Willoughby House] and Courtney's to the west.
The Mount in Alexandra Avenue was the Officer's Mess.
Of the two guns shown, the emplacement for Gun No. 1 has been removed. Gun No.2 is now Two Sugars Cafe. There is no trace of Search Light 1 opposite the bottom of Willoughby Avenue. Search Light 2 building still exists.
Guns QF 4.7 Nos 1402 1578, manufactured in Japan 1918, Issued 26 July 1940 from Royal Naval Ordinance Depot, Priddy's Hard, Gosport.
The Battery Observation Post ( BOP ) is shown in front of the Public Convenience - it must have been quite small. The Public Convenience is thought to be pre-WW2.
L/G No.1 [Lewis Gun 1] was on the southeast corner of Willoughby Avenue and the Esplanade. It has been destroyed. MCC7251
L/G No.2 [Lewis Gun 2] was in the north east corner of the present (2021) children's play area. MCC7252 Its base can be seen in DC3_011
