Notes on some of the names from Pauline Winch: Miss Marjorie French - going into her sweet shop and choosing the favourites from all the glass sweet jars behind her. A quarter of aniseed twists, or lemon sherbets - tipped clattering into the scales and then from the scoop into a small white paper bag. Betty Winch (christened Elizabeth) was the daughter of Howard James Winch by his first wife. His second wife was also called Betty Winch (christened Betty).
