The farmhouse is a mix of additions, the part in the photograph is thought to be the oldest part, of lathe and plaster construction. A red brick front was added to unify the appearance of the house and make it look more expensive. This front was leaning away from the building when it was purchased in the 1980s. A lot of repair work was done by the couple who then purchased it. The house has since been sold to another family. [MS]
James Page was born c1852. The 1881 and 1891 census have him living at Bocking Hall. 1901 Census living at Rewsalls Farm. 1911 Census he is living in East Mersea.
Martin Dence (of Broman's Farm) was given the photograph by Elizabeth & Derek Sadler. It came from the family of James Page, who moved to Mersea and lived and farmed at Bocking Hall, Rewsalls Farm and then Broman's Farm.
This copy of the photograph was enhanced by Redwood Photographic of Colchester. We also have the original damaged photograph and a scan of it - MMC_Q001_004.jpg. This was by R. Deacon, 14 Queens Street, Colchester.

"James(Jimmy) Page took Bocking Hall WEST Mersea some time between 1871 and 1881. He was at Rewsalls East Mersea in 1901. Kelly's directory for 1929 gives Howard Page farmer at Bromans Farm. Howard was son of James. I can remember the Pages at Bromans and Mrs Page riding a tricycle and of course, many of us remember her daughter Diana coming 'Up West' with her donkey and cart and giving rides at fetes.
