Church and City Notes contd.

As our circulation does not justify us in employing a lady to write the notes on dress, any attempt at a description of the costumes (by a mere male) is foredoomed to failure. Suffice it to remark that they were all original, many striking (very), others most becoming.

The Vicar has received donations for the re-building of the Church Hall:
The Bishop of St. Albans, R. Frost Smith Esq., G.E. Roberts Esq. S. Isaacs, Esq., T.L. Eve, Esq, C.T Moy Esq, C.L. lonides Esq.

Just the amount he asked for ! He is most grateful indeed to his friends for such a ready and generous response to his appeal. Even those who refused to help did it so nicely that their letters were quite a pleasure to receive ! One gentleman who has already subscribed liberally offered another guinea if it were needed, but we are glad to find that it is not necessary to ask him for it as he has already done his share.

The Librarian has received a nice parcel of books for the Library from Miss Corrie, whom so many of the people still remember with affection on account of the good work she did whilst living here. Also from Miss Mehalah Depree, a copy "Richard Cable," - the scene of which is laid in Mersea, and "The Life of Baden Powell," by Harold Begbie and from a friend who desires to remain anonymous, "The Orange Girl," by Sir Walter Besant. All are cordially thanked.

Mr. Churchwarden Cross will be glad to receive donations large or small, the former by preference, towards an outing for the members of the Choir. No one, (not even the critics and they are supposed, by themselves ! to know everything) knows how much hard work is willingly done by the Organist and Choir, Those who appreciate the help they give us in our worship will surely be ready to show that appreciation in a practical form.
