Church and City Notes

Our Patronal Festival was duly observed on St. Peter's Day by a Celebration of the Holy Communion at 8 o'clock, followed by Morning Prayer. The Service of the Festival - Choral Holy Communion, was at 11.45, and was carefully and reverently rendered by the Choir. An instructive Sermon was preached by the Rev. J. Evans, Assistant Curate of St. Mary-at-the-Walls, Colchester, who also, in consequence of the illness of the Vicar, very kindly undertook, at the last moment, to officiate. Evening Prayer with procession was sung at 7, and a thoughtful Sermon preached by the Rev. H. Rusbridger, Assistant Curate of St. Giles, Colchester. The Rev. W.B. Hutton, Rector of Langenhoe, kindly officiated. It was intended to continue the Festal Services on the following Sunday, but owing to the continued illness of the Vicar, all but the Evening Service had to be abandoned. At this Service Mr. Hutton again very kindly officiated.

To those mentioned above, and the Rev. A. E. Worsley, who was acting as locum tenens at East Mersea, the Vicar tenders his sincere and heartfelt thanks for their assistance so freely and generously rendered. He would also take this opportunity of thanking those of his own people who in many various ways showed their sympathy with him.

The Collections on St. Peter's Day were for the Church Hall, and amounted to 10s. 10d.

In order to show their appreciation of the work so well done by the Choir, Mrs Pierrepont Edwards and Miss E. Hempstead undertook to collect funds to provide an Excursion for them. The venture was eminently successful, a sum of £6 11s 11d. being thus raised. The Excursion for the Adult members took place on July 11th. A start was made from the Church Green at 6.30 in Mr. Rudlin's "Rainbow"; Colchester was reached in good time and the train taken thence to London. Arrived there the Tower was visited, much interest being taken in the Crown Jewels and other treasures. Next the Tower Bridge was crossed and the journey continued through the busy streets of the Borough, where many a cheery greeting welcomed the party, notably from the "men in blue," to the magnificent church of St. Saviour, soon to blossom into the full glory of a Cathedral. Here the special features of the building were pointed out, and the Plate, etc., shown. Lunch at Reid's Restaurant, Cheapside, was the next item on the programme, to which (as is customary to observe) "ample justice was done." St. Paul's Cathedral was next visited and much admired, then a move was made for Westminster, where the Houses of Parliament and the Abbey were seen. Then came the event of the visit, which was to see the Queen; this was most successfully accomplished on Constitution Hill, and after this came Tea. The day in London finished with a visit to Madame Tussaud's, and thoroughly tired out the return journey to Colchester, which was reached about 11, was commenced. Home was finally arrived at in excellent spirits in the early hours of the next morning, all having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
