Church and City Notes contd.

We dread to make up the accounts of the "Church Gazette". Many subscriptions for 1899 and 1900 are still unpaid. We do not wish to cease publication, so propose to venture on another year in faith and - debt. The "Gazette," however, for 1901 will no longer be published with the "Dawn of Day," but be sold at one penny. It is hoped in this way largely to increase the circulation, if all who have the interest of the Church in West Mersea at heart would exert themselves just a little, the much desired end might be attained. May we request those who do not intend to pay for the "Gazette" during 1901 to be so very kind as to inform the Editor of their generous resolve some time during December ?

A meeting was held on September 12th, at the White Hart, at which the Vicar took the chair, when it was decided to revive the Mersea Pirates' Football Club. Mr. R. Frost Smith was unanimously elected President. Messrs. W. Woods, Albert Mussett and J. Thorp were chosen as Captain and Vice-Captain, and Hon. Sec and Treasurer respectively. The subscription was fixed at, 2/-, and a resolution to join the Essex County Football Association was carried. Mr A. Cock handed over 6s. 10d. balance from last season.

A second meeting was held on October 29th, at which the President took the chair. Captain W. Simpson was elected a Vice-President, and the following, with the officers, were chosen as a Committee to revise rules, etc.:- Messrs. T. French, A Cock, J.H. Smith, A. Hempstead, Jesse Brand, and Clarke Mussett. We wish the "Pirates" a sportsmanlike season and plenty of luck.

Who will give us a bell for the Church Hall, to call the Sunday School children together, we want one badly. Volunteers to finish the painting and staining are much needed. It is very hard work for one pair of hands !

Messrs. C. Hutley, D.R. Cock, and F.C. Fenner have been chosen by the Rural District Council to act with the Vicar and Churchwardens as trustees of Church and Strood Lands in the place of the feofees. The first meeting was duly held on October 9th, and a careful inspection of the property made on October 16th, when many necessary repairs were agreed upon.
