Jane Sampson was born in Derbyshire in 1926. She was educated in the Lake District and evacuated to Oxford during the war. Her first job was at Middlesex Hospital and then she had two house jobs. Married to an Essex farmer in 1952, she has six children, all of whom have been to university. Her medical career has been a varied one, including work for schools, geriatrics and VD cases, and she has spent the last three years working as a missionary doctor in Pakistan.
