Mystery Bones are Returned to Rest
The remains of a man unearthed more than a century after his death, were laid to rest again at East Mersea Church. The bones were found by someone walking on East Mersea Beach

The Police said that the bones were too old to merit an investigation, and archaeologists deemed they were too new to be of historic interest.

Although the man is rumoured to have been a smuggler, he was entitled to a Church of England Burial as a nominal resident of the Parish.

The Rev. Sam Norton conducted the service. Representatives of the Essex Police and Colchester Museum Service were also at the graveside watching as I lowered the box containing the bones into the grave. A wreath was laid with the words;- For Someone's Son. With Deepest Sympathy. Colchester Museums.

I was asked to perform this duty as I am the Verger of East Mersea Church. Some of my other duties include assisting the Rector at Weddings, Blessings and Funerals.
