Bertie Woods was born on Mersea Island in 1891, the son of Mark and Ellen Amelia Woods née Proctor of East Road, East Mersea. He was baptised on 6th November, 1891. He was the middle child of the family with an elder sister, Alice Mary, and a younger sister, Emma.

He attended East Mersea School.

He enlisted at Colchester and joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, eventually being posted to 24th Heavy Battery. The Battery embarked from Southampton, sailing for France on 9th September, 1914.

On 11th August, 1917, he was killed in action. (Location and circumstances are unknown)


Bertie Woods was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, The British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal
