AbstractLocal men who served in WW1 - Arthur Wade
was born 21 June 1895, son of Arthur william and Elizabeth Ann Wade of Birch. In 1914 he was the first man from Birch to join the Army, joining the Bedfordshire Regiment.
He was killed at the Somme 9 July 1916 and is buried Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers - la Boisselle.
Later in the War, his parents moved to Mersea and at their request his name is inscribed on West Mersea War Memorial. He is also commemorated on Birch and Layer Breton War Memorials.
