October 1914, in Royal Naval Reserve, serving on HMS BACCHANTE [Essex County Standard, 31 Oct 1914].
1918 serving as seaman on HMS PEMBROKE [Absent Voters List]
Between the Wars, John worked as a mastheadman on the large racing yachts. At Mersea Regatta, he was well known for climbing the rigging of the Committee barge as the 'duck' in the 'duck hunt'.
