Hervey Benham sailed as Mate on the VENTA at the beginning of the War. In Last Stronghold of Sail, page 177, he says "It was in VENTA that I served a few months as mate with Aflred Eaglestone, of Faversham, a real old coaster skipper who had been master of sea-going barges since he was 18.
