Pub Call. Your 'local'.

The 'Old Victory pub, once a favourite haunt at Wests Mersea, has now been converted into two cottages.

The Victory pub that now stands on Mersea sea-fron was built fairly recently in 1906.

About 100 years ago most Mersea people were farmers or sea-faring men and some turned to smuggling to supplement their paltry incomes. It is easy to picture them sitting in the Old Victory pub planning their next smuggling assignment over a glass of rum.

However, smuggling was not quite so romantic as it sounds today and the Mersea smugglers were undoubtedly very unfriendly people. In the middle of the last century, 22 Excise men were found in their boat off Sunken Island near Mersea, with their throats cut. There seems little doubt that the Mersea smugglers were the culprits.

It is also likely that the Mersea smugglers were the small band of men who landed at Salcott late one night and entered the church. They climbed the tower, stole the bells and shipped them off to Holland

The new Victory pub is run by Mr Bill Bacon and his wife Eileen. Mr Bacon says he has read that the Leather Bottle was used for flashing lights to warn the smugglers.

Mr Bacon says it couldn't be the Leather Bottle at Colchester as it would be too far away to signal, and thinks the Old Victory might hae been called the Leather Bottle a few centuries ago.

The Victory pub was named after Nelson's flagship, simply because Mersea has a great seafaring tradition.

Mr Bacon was at the Maypole and Leather Bottle in Colchester before he moved to The Victory. People come to Mersea to buy oysters and The Victory caters for this demand by selling oysters in the bar during the season.

Mr Bacon has an old ship's bell in the bar. He calls 'time' with the bell, using the same rules used on a ship - Sunday to Thurday five bells in the first watch, and Friday and Saturday six bells in the first watch.

Mr Bacon says he has read that the "Leather Bottle" was used for flashing lights to warn the smugglers.
