In the name of God Amen the tenth Day of December in the yeare of our Lord
God one Thousand six hundred forty and nine, I Simon Scarlett of West mersey in the
County of Essex. Yeoman being sick and weake in body but of sound and p[er]fect memory
praise be given to God for the same and knowing the uncertainty of this life on earth
and being desirous to settle things in Order doe make this my last Will and Testament
in manner and form following. That is to say first I commend my Soule to Almighty
God my Creator assuredly believing that I shall receive free pardon and remission of all
my Sins and be saved by the p[re]tious death and meritts of my blessed Saviour and Redeemer
Christ Jesus and my body to the earth from whence it was taken to be buried in such
decent and Christian manner as to my Executrix hereafter named, shall be thought meet
and convenient. As touching such worldly Estate as the Lord in mercy hath lent me, my
Will and meaning is, that the same shall be employed and bestowed as hereafter by this
Will is expressed. And first I doe revoke frustrate and make voyd all Wills by me for-
merly made and declard and apoint this my last Will and Testament. Item I bequeath
unto John my eldest Sonne the sum[m]e of twenty shillings to be payed to him when he shall
attaine to the age of twenty and one yeares. Item I give and bequeath unto Thomas my
second sonne the sum[m]e of twenty shillings to be payed to him when he shall attain to the age
of twenty and one yeares. Item I give and bequeath unto Simon my Younguest Sonne
and to his heires one House in Saltcote p[ar]ish commonly called the Greyhound now in the
occupation of Samuell Butler. Item I give and bequeath unto Mercy my Daughter
and to her Heires one house in Saltcote commonly called Wrights. Item I give to Mercy
my Daughter the sum[m]e of thirty pounds to be payed to her when shee shall accomplish the
age of twenty and one yeares. All the rest of my goods unbequeathed my debts and lega-
cies payed, my funerall expenses discharged. I give unto Mercy my wife whom I apoint my
full and sole Executrix: And I further Will that shee have the rents and profits of all my
Lands and tenements whatsoever till my Children shall accomplish their severall ages aforesaid;
Provided shee see them carefully educated and keep the houses in due reparation making no
wast in the grounds nor cutting down of Timber. And I appoint John Gower of Coleches
ter my wife's Father and Rob[er]t Paine of this Parish of West mersey Supervisors of
this my last will and Testament. In witnesse whereof I have hereunto subscribed
my name and sett my Seale the day and yeare above written
